I get completely frustrated when I can’t fall asleep. Lying awake, watching the minutes tick by, tossing and turning — it’s the worst. We all deal with it sometimes, whether from stress, exhaustion, or just feeling too wired. Aromatherapy isn’t a cure-all for sleep problems, but it’s a useful way to signal your body that it’s time to relax. Some essential oils are especially calming and can help set the mood for sleep.

Essential oils I keep on hand for sleep:

A couple of spritzes at bedtime is a gentle cue for your body to wind down. Building bedtime routines and small rituals can help reduce the time spent awake in bed and increase the time you actually sleep.

How to make each spray:
Start with 1 ounce witch hazel or vodka plus 1 ounce distilled water in a small spray bottle. Add the essential oils listed for each recipe, then shake well before each use.

– 10 drops lavender
– 5 drops orange
– 5 drops chamomile

Sweet Dreams
– 10 drops lavender
– 10 drops chamomile

Sleepy Time
– 12 drops lavender
– 4 drops ylang ylang
– 8 drops bergamot

Lullaby
– 10 drops lavender
– 10 drops cedarwood

Ocean Waves
– 10 drops rosemary
– 10 drops lavender
– 3 drops lemongrass

Meditation
– 5 drops sandalwood
– 4 drops lavender
– 3 drops frankincense
– 3 drops geranium

To use: Shake well and spritz lightly on your pillow, sheets, or around your sleeping area.
