The last week of April is National Infant Immunization Week, a great time to remind everyone why protecting babies and young children from vaccine-preventable diseases matters.

I partnered with I Vaccinate to share my story, and this content is sponsored by I Vaccinate.

Is Your Child Up to Date on Vaccinations?

The past few years have been chaotic for many families, and some children fell behind on routine well-checks and vaccinations. In honor of this week, I want to share why staying up to date on vaccines is so important to me.

Keeping Vaccines Up to Date
As a mom, I try to do everything I can to keep my kids healthy—making sure they sleep enough, eat well, stay active, and get their vaccines on schedule. Since my children were babies, we’ve followed the recommended vaccination timeline because it’s one of the best ways to prevent serious illness and hospital stays.

Following the recommended schedule for infants, children, and teens helps make sure they’re protected when they need it most. Babies’ immune systems are still developing, so they’re more vulnerable to severe illness. Vaccines protect kids and teens from 16 vaccine-preventable diseases, including HPV, which can cause six types of cancer. Getting vaccines on time helps ensure protection early on.

Protection From Serious Illnesses
Immunizations protect babies and children from dangerous, sometimes life-threatening diseases. Vaccines have been shown to be safe and effective against illnesses like measles, mumps, rubella, polio, and whooping cough. By vaccinating our children, we reduce their risk of these serious diseases.

Community Protection
Vaccination is a shared responsibility. Vaccines protect individuals and help prevent the spread of disease in the community. When many people are vaccinated, herd immunity makes it harder for illnesses to spread, which protects those who can’t be vaccinated, like infants who are too young or people with weakened immune systems.

By vaccinating our kids, we also help protect future generations. Many diseases that used to be common and deadly are now rare thanks to vaccines. Keeping up the vaccination routine helps make sure those diseases don’t come back.

Safe and Effective
Vaccines are safe and have been carefully tested. Serious side effects are very rare, and the benefits of vaccination far outweigh the risks. The U.S. vaccine safety system watches over recommendations and updates them as new science becomes available to keep vaccines as safe as possible.

Peace of Mind
Vaccinating my children gives me peace of mind. I feel confident that I’m doing what I can to protect them from serious illnesses. Vaccines also make me more comfortable when we travel or spend time around others, knowing my kids have protection against many dangerous diseases.

National Infant Immunization Week is a helpful reminder to check on vaccinations. If you’re unsure whether your children are up to date, call your pediatrician so they can help you catch up. You can learn more about vaccine safety and effectiveness from trusted sources like iVaccinate.org. I Vaccinate offers information and tools based on medical science and research to help Michigan parents protect their kids.

This strawberry rhubarb bread with a cinnamon-sugar topping is one of my favorite sweet treats in spring and summer. The bright sweetness of fresh strawberries pairs perfectly with tart rhubarb, and the cinnamon-sugar streusel brings everything together for a crowd-pleasing loaf.

I love eating fresh fruit and produce during the warmer months. My parents always gardened when I was growing up, so it’s no surprise I picked up a few green-thumb habits. This year our garden was smaller because of home construction, but we still kept a small plot and cared for the plants we had.

Strawberry-Rhubarb Loaf with Cinnamon-Sugar Streusel

Rhubarb is a highlight of spring and summer for us. With big, leafy greens and tall, pink stalks, its flavor is very tart and works beautifully in pies, crumbles, jams, and sauces. I especially like to cook rhubarb with sweet strawberries — the contrast of sweet and tart is ideal, and both are in season in spring.

One of my go-to treats during these months is this strawberry rhubarb bread. Sweet strawberries and tart rhubarb bake into a cinnamon-flavored quick bread that’s delicious warm. A slice topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream is hard to beat. The cinnamon-sugar topping complements the fruit perfectly.

I also like shortcuts now and then. This recipe is quick and easy thanks to boxed vanilla muffin mix, which speeds things up — especially helpful when little helpers want to join in the kitchen!

Tips for using muffin mix in quick bread:
– Bake at a lower temperature and for a longer time. A good rule is to reduce the oven temperature by 25ºF.
– Make sure the mix yields enough batter; choose one that makes at least 12 muffins. Fill the loaf pan leaving 1 to 2 inches of space at the top. If you’re worried about overflow, place a pan underneath to catch drips.
– I’ve adjusted the temperature and baking time in the recipe below, so you can follow it as written.

Strawberry Rhubarb Bread with Cinnamon Sugar Topping

Prep time: 5 minutes
Cook time: 50 minutes
Total time: 55 minutes
Servings: 1 loaf

Ingredients
Bread
– 1/2 cup rhubarb, chopped
– 1/2 cup strawberries, chopped
– 1 package vanilla muffin mix
– 1/4 cup flour

Cinnamon-Sugar Streusel Topping
– 1/3 cup sugar
– 1/4 cup flour
– 1 teaspoon cinnamon
– 1/4 teaspoon salt
– 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, room temperature

Instructions
1. Preheat the oven to 375ºF. Grease a loaf pan.
2. Prepare the muffin mix according to the package directions (use the amounts listed for oil, water, and eggs) in a large bowl.
3. In a separate bowl, toss the chopped rhubarb and strawberries with 1/4 cup flour. This helps keep the fruit from sinking while baking.
4. Fold the fruit into the batter and pour the mixture into the loaf pan.
5. In a small bowl, combine the streusel ingredients and mix with a fork until the mixture is crumbly. Sprinkle it evenly over the batter.
6. Bake 50–60 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Let cool before slicing and serving.

To enjoy rhubarb year-round, you can freeze it for later use.

How to Freeze Rhubarb
Rhubarb’s season is short, so freezing is a simple way to save it. Wash and dry the stalks, then cut into 1-inch pieces. Put the pieces in an airtight freezer bag and freeze. Properly stored, rhubarb will keep in the freezer for up to a year.

I’m a bit of a yoga junkie, so when I was invited to check out The Space and The Fuel at Green Oak Village Place in Brighton, I was excited. I’d been following them online for a while and loved watching the space come together.

The Space is a beautiful yoga studio offering many different styles. From the moment you walk in, the vibe is warm and welcoming and the clean, modern design is lovely. There’s a strong sense of community among regulars, but my friend and I felt welcome as first-timers.

Yoga & Clean Eating at The Space & The Fuel in Brighton, MI — Giveaway

The studio has infrared-heated ceilings that provide direct warmth—like sunlight—without drying out the air. The heat is strong enough to help with flexibility and boost your cardio, but not so intense that it becomes uncomfortable. I appreciated that it wasn’t over the top; some studios are way too hot for my taste.

Image: https://www.instagram.com/thespacebrighton/

They also have an infrared sauna with Himalayan salt panels, which is designed to promote circulation and encourage sweating out toxins—I wish I’d had more time to try it.

Around the lobby you’ll find retail items: crystals, air plants, natural beauty products, handmade jewelry and malas, and clothing. It’s a great spot to pick up a gift or a little treasure for yourself.

Classes span all levels. A few of the offerings include:
– The Fusion — A mix of strength and cardio with vinyasa flows and extended holds in a heated room. Good for all levels with modifications.
– The Calm — Full-body, active recovery in a hatha style at room temperature. Great for runners and crossfitters.
– The Strength — Bodyweight, weights, and bands focused on strength and HIIT for intense training. For intermediate and advanced students; non-heated.
– The Release — A signature vinyasa flow that emphasizes ujjayi breath and uplifting messages. Includes chances to flow together and solo; suitable for all levels with modifications. Heated room.
– The Dance — Dance-based yoga with plyometrics and dynamic asanas for a fast, fun cardio workout. Open to all levels.
– The Contrast — A yinyasa blend with boot-camp-style drills and HIIT to raise your heart rate, then slow down to stretch. For intermediate and advanced students; starts heated and finishes at room temp.
– The Flight — Starts with vinyasa and moves into inversions, with time to workshop poses. All levels welcome with modifications. Heated room.

See their schedule HERE.

My friend and I tried The Release with Kelli and I loved it. The flow and energy in the room were great. Between vinyasa sequences we did some HIIT moves like burpees, punching, and freestyle dance, and it felt like a real release. Pushing yourself physically can open you up and let go of stress, worry, and negative energy. When you hit your edge you can find clarity and feel refreshed. The class’s positive messages added a lot, and everyone in the room was so supportive.

If you’re a parent, there’s childcare! They offer care for kids ages 0–12 while you take a class, which makes it much easier to fit practice into a busy day. Check the schedule to see childcare times.

After class, we headed next door to The Fuel. Their menu has cold-pressed juices, smoothies, salads, wraps, zoodles, and more. Everything is dairy-free, gluten-free, oil-free, plant-based, and made from fresh whole foods, with lots of seasonal ingredients. I loved how fresh everything tasted, and the presentation was lovely. It’s perfect for refueling, rehydrating, and replenishing after a workout—I had the açaí bowl and it was amazing.

Green Oak Village Place, The Space, and The Fuel are hosting two giveaways for my readers. One winner will receive a gift certificate for two weeks of unlimited classes at The Space, and another winner will receive a $25 gift certificate to The Fuel. Follow the prompts below to enter and good luck!

As parents, our first priority is keeping our children safe and healthy. In a world full of risks, taking simple, proactive steps can make a big difference. From vaccinations to teaching body boundaries, here are key actions you can take to protect your child’s well-being.

I partnered with I Vaccinate to share my story. This content is sponsored by I Vaccinate.

Protecting Your Child’s Health: A Parent’s Guide to Preventive Care

Here are nine easy tips to keep your kids healthy and safe:

1. Vaccinations: Your Best Defense
Vaccines are safe and one of the most effective ways to protect children from serious illnesses. Following the recommended vaccine schedule for your child helps keep them healthy and supports community immunity. With the first measles cases in Michigan since 2019, it’s more important than ever to keep up with well-child visits and timely vaccinations. Vaccines protect kids and teens against 16 vaccine-preventable diseases, including measles, mumps, rubella, polio, and HPV (which can lead to several types of cancer). Vaccinating reduces the chance of outbreaks and helps protect those who can’t be vaccinated for medical reasons. As a mom and public health advocate, I trust the research and have chosen to vaccinate my children. If you have questions, talk with your pediatrician or visit IVaccinate.org for reliable information.

2. Car Seat Safety: Always Buckle Up
Using the right car seat or booster for your child’s age, weight, and height is essential. Make sure they are properly secured every ride, and remember that children under 13 should ride in the back seat to reduce airbag risks.

3. Helmets for Wheeled Activities
Whether your child rides a bike, skateboard, or scooter, a helmet is a must. A well-fitting helmet greatly lowers the chance of head injury. Encourage helmet use early and set the example by wearing one when you ride together.

4. Teach Body Boundaries
Talk to your children about body boundaries in a clear, age-appropriate way. Let them know their body belongs to them and that it’s okay to say no to touches that make them uncomfortable—even from people they know. Teach them to tell a trusted adult if someone crosses their boundaries.

5. Teach About Strangers and Safety
Help your children recognize risky situations and how to respond. Teach basic rules like not talking to strangers, not accepting gifts without parental permission, and finding a trusted adult if they feel unsafe.

6. Encourage Healthy Habits
A healthy lifestyle supports safety and growth. Promote regular physical activity, balanced meals, and enough sleep. Model these habits yourself—kids learn a lot by watching their parents.

7. Limit Screen Time
Set limits on screens and encourage activities that boost creativity, social skills, and movement. Try screen-free times like during meals or before bed to build better habits and reduce overuse.

8. Teach Good Hygiene
Teach children to wash their hands often, brush their teeth twice daily, and cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue or their elbow. Reinforce these habits with gentle reminders and praise.

9. Be Ready for Emergencies
Prepare for the unexpected. Make sure your child knows their full name, address, and how to reach you or another trusted adult. Teach them how to call 911 and basic, age-appropriate first aid. Keep a first aid kit at home and in the car, and have a family plan for different emergencies.

Keeping our children safe and healthy is our top job as parents. Stay informed, take proactive steps, and encourage healthy habits so your children can grow and thrive. Let’s prioritize their safety and well-being, one small step at a time.

We often wait for the big moments—weddings, births, vacations, graduations—counting down and preparing for them. Those events bring lots of joy, but there’s also real magic in the everyday routine if we notice it.

Finding Wonder in Everyday Moments: Mindfulness and Meditation

With a few small shifts in how we see things, more attention to our senses, and a bit of mindfulness, ordinary moments can sparkle. We tend to operate on autopilot and miss what’s around us. Pausing to really think about what you’re doing and considering other perspectives helps you be more present. Mindfulness can turn boring tasks into fresh experiences. Whether you add gratitude to your day, tune into your senses, or try looking at things from someone else’s viewpoint, being more mindful can change how you see the world.

The good news: you don’t need a lot of extra time to be more mindful or to meditate. Short moments of presence during your day can boost your mental and physical well-being. Below are simple ideas to help you love the life you have—through the mundane, the momentous, and everything in between.

How to Find Magic in the Mundane

Cooking
Cooking can feel like a chore, but it’s a great chance to practice mindfulness. While cooking and eating, tune into your senses: smell, touch, sight, taste, and hearing. Notice if the dish smells sweet, spicy, or sharp. How does it feel—smooth or textured? Does the color change as it cooks? Listen for the sizzle or the bubbling. Taste each ingredient and notice how flavors change.

Another mindful practice is tracing food’s journey from field to plate. Think about the sun, rain, and pollinators, and all the people who help move food from farms to stores—farmers, packers, drivers, and stockers. It’s remarkable how many hands and forces bring simple meals to our tables.

Breath Meditation
When stress appears, one or two minutes of breath meditation can help a lot. “Take a deep breath” is sound advice for a reason—breath work can lower anxiety, sharpen focus, improve sleep, and support heart health. A simple beginner practice is Shamatha, or “breathing as is,” a reset breath to bring you back to the present. You can do it anywhere—at lunch, in the car line, or while waiting for the bus.

How to Practice Breath Meditation
Sit or stand comfortably with a tall spine. Notice the weight of your body where it meets the ground. Close your eyes or soften your gaze. Observe your natural breath without trying to change it. Feel your belly rise and fall. Notice the air at your nostrils—cool or warm? If your thoughts wander, just acknowledge them and return to the breath. Beginners can use a simple mantra, like “I am” on the inhale and “calm” or “safe” on the exhale. Placing a hand on your heart or belly can help you connect with your breathing.

Play
As adults, we forget how joyful play can be. Not everything needs to be serious. Notice the world with a childlike eye—the breeze in your hair, laughter, small movements, ants crossing the pavement. Let yourself enjoy simple, playful moments.

Morning Coffee or Tea Meditation
Connecting mindfulness to a daily habit makes it easier to stick with. A coffee or tea break under five minutes is a quick way to add calm to your morning.

How to Do a Tea or Coffee Meditation
Sit comfortably and hold your cup with both hands. Notice sensations: the warmth on your palms, the texture of the mug, the aroma rising from the cup. Pause and notice how your body responds. Take your first sip and stay with the taste and feeling.

Savor Nature
Finding little ways to connect with nature can lift ordinary moments. Whether you’re grabbing the mail, walking to the bus, or taking a stroll, take a short break to notice the outdoors. If possible, take off your shoes and feel the ground, enjoy the sun or breeze, watch bees or bugs, listen for birds or frogs, and take in the colors and textures around you.

Connecting with Loved Ones
With constant distractions, it’s easy to go through the motions without truly connecting. Each day, set aside time to disconnect from devices and to-do lists and be fully present with someone you care about. Look them in the eye, listen closely, and give them your full attention.

Waiting in Line at the Store
Lines can feel like wasted time, but they’re a chance to pause. Use that waiting time to notice your surroundings, daydream, or simply breathe. These small pauses can be surprisingly refreshing.

Skincare Routine
Skincare routines can seem tedious, but they’re an easy way to add mindfulness to your day. Slowing down your routine can feel like an act of self-care. As you apply creams, serums, or oils, notice the scents, textures, and the way your skin responds. Choose products that nourish your skin with natural ingredients and appreciate their benefits.

Featured Products I Recommend
Herbal Tea: NOW Foods offers lots of teas for different moods. Black tea is great for a morning pick-me-up (try adding a bit of manuka honey). Hibiscus tea is light and fruity for summer—delicious iced. In the evening, I love a Nighttime tea with spearmint and chamomile to help unwind.
Skin Care: Facial oils have become a favorite in my routine. The Balance Facial Oil leaves skin soft, nourished, and hydrated with a blend of natural oils. I like using it with a vibrating t-wand or gua sha stone for a mindful pampering session.
Protein Powders and Smoothie Add-Ins: Summer means smoothies for me. A good protein powder (this one tastes great and digests easily) boosts nutrition. I also add nuts, seeds, and fresh fruit for texture and flavor.

I recently received a box of great products from brands at ShiftCon 2018 to try and review. They included health and beauty items, wholesome snacks, a SCOBY to make my own kombucha, and more. Here are a few of my favorites my family and I have been enjoying this past month.

NeoCell Super Collagen
Remember the bone broth trend? Collagen offers many of the same benefits and can help improve skin, hair, tendons, bones, and joints. Our bodies make a lot less collagen after about age 25, so a supplement can be a helpful boost. NeoCell Super Collagen is unflavored and mixes easily into hot or cold drinks—I like adding it to my afternoon coffee or smoothies.

Top Natural Health & Beauty Picks for April

Ona Functional Fuel Plant Protein Bars
These are delicious and made with simple, natural ingredients. Ona bars are grain-free, dairy-free, soy-free, contain no refined sugars, and are full of healthy fats, fiber, probiotics, and clean ingredients like coconut, nuts, and plant proteins. I grab one before or after a workout. They’re the first bar I’ve seen with probiotics to support gut health, which is a big plus.

Earth Mama Organics Natural Deodorant
I’ve been searching for a natural deodorant for a while because I don’t like some of the questionable ingredients in mainstream products, like aluminum. I tried Earth Mama Organics Natural Deodorant this past week (Bright Citrus is my favorite) and I’m really impressed. It contains no propylene glycol, artificial fragrances, parabens, or aluminum. I’ve used other Earth Mama products before and loved them, so I’m glad to have another one I can trust. It keeps odor in check—even during sweaty hot yoga—and I haven’t had any irritation.

Betsy’s Best Almond Butter with Cinnamon and Chia Seeds
This almond butter is fantastic. Betsy’s Best has unique, gourmet flavors and a great texture—not fully smooth or crunchy, but a satisfying mix from the seeds and add-ins. The mix of almonds with cinnamon, chia seeds, Himalayan pink salt, and organic honey is perfect by the spoonful, on toast, with apple slices, or drizzled over oatmeal or smoothies.

Kombucha Kamp SCOBY
After our trip to San Diego we got hooked on kombucha on tap. Buying it every day gets expensive, so when Kombucha Kamp (a top kombucha shop) offered to send a SCOBY to make our own, I jumped at the chance. Kombucha is rich in probiotics, has the benefits of tea, antioxidants, and more. We haven’t brewed ours yet, but their website has lots of helpful info and everything you need to get started. At roughly $4 a bottle retail, buying a SCOBY for $25 is a more budget-friendly option. We’ll start ours this week (brewing takes about 7 to 30 days depending on taste), so follow along on my Instagram to see how it goes.

One of my favorite things is waking up to a tidy house. There’s something about a clean space that makes the whole day feel better. That’s been especially true now that I work from home and we’re helping our kids with distance learning every day.

9 Everyday Habits for a Cleaner Home

With everyone at home more often, sticking to cleaning habits has become essential. More time at home equals more messes. The last few months have tested my patience and flexibility when it comes to keeping the house in order. A messy, disorganized home really raises my anxiety, so I’ve focused on a few simple, realistic routines and tools that help keep things manageable. Our home isn’t always magazine-perfect, but these steps help us avoid spending half the weekend catching up.

9 Daily Habits for Keeping Your House Clean

Make Your Bed Every Morning
Making the bed instantly makes the room feel cleaner. That small act often motivates me to tidy up a few more things. Encourage the kids to make their beds too — they don’t have to get it perfect, but it’s a great first chore.

Clean As You Go
This sounds obvious but it’s often overlooked. Little clean-up moments throughout the day prevent big messes. Wipe counters after cooking, toss junk mail in the recycling right away, and have the kids put away backpacks and shoes as soon as they come in. Rinse dishes and load the dishwasher instead of piling them up. Hand-vacuum crumbs and craft messes immediately. We love our ONEPWR™ Dust Chaser™ Hand Vacuum for quick clean-ups — it’s so easy even the kids can use it!

Having basic cleaning supplies within easy reach makes tidying up much simpler. I keep each bathroom stocked and keep the kitchen and dining area ready with what we need. It saves time and avoids the hassle of hunting for supplies.

For larger items like vacuums, we rely on Hoover. The ONEPWR™ Evolve Pet™ Cordless Vacuum is a must for everyday messes, and the ONEPWR™ Dust Chaser™ Hand Vacuum is great for quick spot cleaning.

The ONEPWR™ Evolve Pet™ is lightweight (under 9 pounds) and cordless, so it’s easy to move from room to room without dealing with cords. Its removable, rechargeable ONEPWR battery gives steady power for carpets and hard floors, and the adjustable brush roll and suction settings help tackle different messes. The extra-large dirt cup holds three times more dirt and pet hair. As a family with allergies, we appreciate the antimicrobial brush roll and pet filter that help prevent odor-causing bacteria. I was skeptical about a battery-powered vacuum at first, but it handles crumbs and confetti like a champ.

The ONEPWR™ Dust Chaser™ Hand Vacuum is under 3 pounds and super convenient for quick clean-ups. Its ONEPWR 2.0 Ah battery gives twice the suction and runs for 30+ minutes with a high-performance motor. It’s perfect for cars, couches, or catching glitter after crafts. My kids love grabbing it to help, which is a huge bonus for me.

Morning/Evening Blitz Clean
Spend 10–15 minutes in the morning or evening doing a quick tidy. After dinner, we spend a few minutes putting things away and wiping counters. With everyone pitching in, the house feels much more ready for the next day.

Get Everyone Involved
Cleaning shouldn’t fall on one parent. Assign tasks to each family member and teach kids to clean up after themselves. Kids can do many chores: make their bed, set and clear the table, fold laundry, dust, wash windows, load the dishwasher, pick up toys, vacuum, sweep, and mop. They won’t be perfect, but starting young builds responsibility.

The 5-Minute Rule
If a task takes less than five minutes, do it now. Those little jobs add up, and crossing them off quickly reduces stress and helps keep the house in better shape.

One Load of Laundry a Day
Laundry piles up fast. Doing one load a day has been a game changer for us. Kids can help fold and put away their clothes too.

Progress Over Perfection
Don’t expect to finish everything in a day. Focus on the basics and work on other projects slowly. Consistency beats trying to be perfect all at once.

Everything Has a Place
I’m still organizing, but giving everything a home makes a big difference. Use bins in closets and storage areas, label them, and it becomes much easier to find things and keep surfaces clear.
