A few weeks ago my family and I took a short getaway to the Bavarian Inn and Bavarian Restaurant, which was perfect since the weather was still freezing and cabin fever had set in.

A Weekend Retreat at the Bavarian Inn and Restaurant

The Bavarian Inn Lodge is in Frankenmuth, tucked along the Cass River, and it’s one of Michigan’s top tourist stops. The hotel has a fun European theme and is great for families — it features a large indoor water park with two big slides, three pools, and two whirlpools. The 35,000-square-foot Family Fun Center is packed with video and carnival-style games, a children’s play village, and indoor mini-golf.

We spent most of our first day at the pool. With kids aged 2 and 4, the toddler pool was ideal. They loved the geysers and splash fountains, and my husband and I could wade in with them without worrying because the depth is toddler-friendly.

After swimming we had a massive dinner at the Bavarian Inn Restaurant — and I mean massive. The restaurant is famous for its chicken dinners, baked goods, and selection of German beers. The European-style dining room is family-friendly, and seeing servers in traditional German clothing is a fun touch. We ordered the Ultimate Family-Style Bavarian Dinner to sample everything, and we even had a pitcher of German Dunkel beer.

The meal included five meats:

We were stuffed.

After dinner we walked back to our hotel room (there’s a shuttle too, but the weather was nice and we wanted the kids to burn off more energy). The rooms are spacious, and Aiden was thrilled to spread out on a queen bed all to himself.

The next morning we had a late breakfast buffet at Oma’s Restaurant in the hotel, then headed to the arcade and Family Fun Center for mini golf. There are so many arcade games, and I was surprised at how inexpensive they were to play. Aiden loved every minute.

Bavarian Inn and Restaurant was the perfect little getaway close to home. Aiden’s already asking to go back so he can play in the pools!

Candy Corn Gelatin Fruit Cups

I absolutely love making these candy corn Jell-O fruit cups. They’re cute, simple to make, and kids go crazy for them. I’ve brought them to after-school snacks, classroom Halloween parties, and play dates, and the kids always ask for more. The layered colors are a fun touch for any fall gathering.

They use just a few ingredients: Jell-O and fresh or canned fruit. You can make them ahead to save time—just wait to add the whipped topping until serving. These are also a good classroom option since they’re nut-free (just check for milk allergies if you’ll add whipped topping).

How to make candy corn Jell-O fruit cups

Ingredients:
– Lemon Jell-O (1 package)
– Orange-colored fruit (about 2 cups): mandarins or peaches work well. If using canned fruit, drain well. Fresh fruit is fine too.
– Whipped topping

Steps:
1. Pour prepared lemon Jell-O into the bottom third of a clear cup. Chill in the fridge until set (about 3–4 hours).
2. Once the Jell-O is firm, add the orange fruit on top.
3. Add whipped topping just before serving.

Tips for class or large groups:
– Use clear plastic cups for easy serving and cleanup.
– You can also scoop some yellow Jell-O into cups and top with fruit instead of fully setting it in each cup—less pretty but quicker.

Spend 10–15 minutes in the morning or evening doing a quick tidy. After dinner, I like to put things back where they belong and do a quick counter wipe. With the whole family pitching in, we can get the house in better shape fast. Waking up to a cleaned-up home feels great.

This is crucial. Cleaning shouldn’t fall on one parent. Give kids tasks and teach them to clean up after themselves. Kids can do so much, like:

Running is one of my favorite workouts for lots of reasons. It helps me stay fit, relieve stress, and lose weight. I also like that you can run almost anywhere, with very little equipment, so it’s easy for many people to try.

For a lot of new runners, a 5K is the first race they attempt. I remember my first 5K—I was nervous and a bit intimidated, but I had a blast and learned a lot. Many people get hooked on running because racing brings out a competitive spirit, post-race endorphins (the famous “runner’s high”), and a big boost in confidence when you meet your goals.

Getting started for your first 5K can feel overwhelming. If you’re unsure where to begin, these tips will help you feel more prepared and confident.

Tips for Running Your First 5K

Warm up and cool down
Prepare your body before running. Many people skip warm-ups, but a little stretching and a 5-minute warm-up will get you ready physically and mentally. Stretching beforehand can help prevent tightness and pain during your run. After your workout, cool down with a 2-minute walk and some gentle stretches to help your heart rate return to normal and avoid dizziness.

Practice short distances
Don’t feel like you have to run a full 5K right away, especially if you’re brand new. Start with shorter runs—less than two miles—at an easy, steady pace for around 30 minutes, and slowly increase distance from there. Hydrate smartly
Stay hydrated in the days before the race so your muscles don’t cramp and you don’t run low on energy. Don’t chug a lot of water right before the start—instead, sip regularly in the days leading up to the race and have a couple of cups a few hours before the race so you don’t need extra bathroom stops during the run.

Wear comfortable, proper running clothes
Choose clothing made for running—it breathes better, wicks sweat, and keeps you comfortable. Women should choose a well-fitting, high-support sports bra. Always test your race outfit on a run before race day.

Get the right shoes
Wearing the wrong shoes can cause blisters and pain. Make sure your shoes fit well and give your feet room to move. Break them in with a few short runs before race day.

If you’re running regularly, eat well to fuel your body. On race day, have your last meal 2–3 hours before the start. Choose a lighter meal with lean protein and whole grains, and avoid heavy fats or lots of fiber that are slow to digest.

Whether you work from home or spend long hours at an office desk, sitting in front of a computer most of the day can wreck your posture and create tension that leads to aches. Even as the pandemic eases, many of us still sit for long stretches, which often results in neck and shoulder pain.

There are lots of ways to ease the stiffness from desk work. Here are simple chair- and desk-friendly yoga moves that help release tension in the neck, shoulders, back and hips—the areas that hold stress when you work on a computer. Just 5–10 minutes of movement or a short midday break can make a big difference. The best part is you can do these stretches while staying at your desk.

Below are several gentle stretches that target the neck, shoulders and back. Adding a few of these chair yoga moves to your day helps get the blood flowing, release stress and give your body some much-needed TLC.

Chair Yoga Stretches You Can Do at Your Desk

Neck Release (loosens the neck and shoulders)
Sit tall with both feet on the floor. Slowly look up, down, left and right. Bring your chin to your chest, then tilt your head toward your right shoulder, keeping the shoulders relaxed (don’t shrug). Hold for 5–10 breaths, feeling the side of your neck stretch. Repeat on the other side.

Seated Cat/Cow (opens the chest and mobilizes the spine)
Sit on the edge of your chair with feet hip-width apart and hands on your knees or thighs. Inhale, lift your chest, broaden your collarbones, and gently look up. Exhale, round your spine, tuck your chin and feel a stretch along your back. Move slowly through 5–10 cycles, or hold each position for a few breaths if that feels better.

Seated Forward Fold (releases the neck, back and hips)
Sit near the front edge of your chair with feet slightly wider than hip-width. Place your hands on your thighs. Inhale, then exhale and fold forward from the hips, letting your chest rest on or between your legs. Let your head and shoulders hang heavy. Inhale to slowly come back up with hands on your thighs.

Shoulder-opening option: Before folding, clasp your hands behind your back. You can hold a towel between your hands for more space. As you fold, lift your clasped hands to deepen the stretch.

Shoulder Stretch
Bring one arm across your chest and use the opposite hand to gently pull the arm toward your body, feeling the stretch across the back of the shoulder. Hold for several breaths, then switch sides.

Desk Downward-Facing Dog (stretches shoulders, chest, hamstrings and calves)
Stand in front of a sturdy desk. Place both hands on the desk edge and step back until your body forms an L shape. Press your chest down and breathe here for a few breaths. This opens the shoulders and stretches the legs.

Crescent Moon (side stretch)
Sit on the edge of your chair with feet hip-width apart. Inhale and reach both arms overhead. Grab your left wrist with your right hand and gently pull to the right on an exhale. Return to center, then grab your right wrist with your left hand and pull to the left. Flow with your breath for about five cycles.

Chair Pigeon (hip opener)
Sit toward the front of your chair with feet hip-width apart. Lift your right knee and hug it toward your chest if that feels good. Cross your right ankle over your left thigh, just above the knee. You’ll feel a stretch in the outer hip. For a deeper stretch, lengthen your spine on an inhale, then fold forward slightly from the hips on an exhale. Repeat on the other side.

Seated Twists (releases lower back, opens chest and shoulders)
Sit on the edge of the chair with feet hip-width apart. Place your left hand on your right knee. Inhale to lengthen the spine, then exhale and twist to the right from your midsection. Turn your gaze toward your right shoulder if it feels comfortable. Hold for five breaths, return to center, and repeat on the other side.

Reverse Happy Baby (deep hip opener)
Sit on the edge of your chair with feet hip-width apart. Inhale to lengthen your spine, then fold forward and bring your body between your legs, tucking your chin. Slide your arms behind your calves and reach for the outer edges of your feet. Use your arms to gently pull your body into a deeper fold. Hold for a few breaths, then inhale to slowly sit back up.

Eagle Arms (upper back and shoulder stretch)
Sit tall and extend your arms out to the sides at shoulder height, then cross your right arm over your left at the elbows. Wrap your forearms around each other and try to bring your palms together. Keep your shoulders down and lift your elbows slightly. Hold for several breaths, then switch sides. To intensify, press the underside of your upper arm onto a desk or table while holding the pose.

Shoulder Circles (improves shoulder mobility)
Reach your arms out to the sides at shoulder level and make slow circles forward a few times, then reverse and circle backward.

When work gets busy, it’s easy to sit for hours without moving. Taking short stretch breaks helps prevent fatigue, reduces tension and keeps your muscles healthy. Try to get up at least once an hour—even if it’s just to refill a water bottle, check the mail or do a quick desk stretch. Your body will thank you for the little bit of care.

Chicken:

Dried cranberries:
To boost their flavor, I often plump dried cranberries before adding them. Pour boiling water over the cranberries in a small bowl, let them sit for 5 minutes, then drain and add to the salad.

Dressing:
Raspberry vinaigrette is my favorite for this salad. I prefer a vinaigrette over a creamy dressing, though both pair nicely. If you want to make a homemade dressing, choose a simple recipe and reduce the sugar if you prefer it less sweet.

Making for a crowd:
Double or triple the recipe for larger groups. If prepping ahead, store components separately so the greens stay crisp.

Make-ahead and storage tips:
Store the ingredients separately in airtight containers in the fridge and assemble right before serving to prevent wilting. The salad is best eaten fresh. If dressed, eat within 24 hours. Undressed, it will keep up to 3 days in the fridge.

INGREDIENTS
– 2 heads romaine, coarsely chopped
– 6 oz spring mix
– 3–4 cooked chicken breasts, sliced or chopped
– 1/3 cup dried cranberries
– 1/4 cup red onion, sliced
– 2 apples, sliced or chopped
– 1/3 cup gorgonzola, crumbled

INSTRUCTIONS
1. In a large bowl, combine the salad greens, chicken, apples, red onion, cranberries, gorgonzola, and honey-roasted pecans. Mix well.
